Description

The last novel Ernest Hemingway saw published, The Old Man and the Sea has proved itself to be one of the enduring works of American fiction. It is the story of an old Cuban fisherman and his supreme ordeal: a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Using the simple, powerful language of a fable, Hemingway takes the timeless themes of courage in the face of defeat and personal triumph won from loss and transforms them into a magnificent twentieth-century classic.

The old man was poor, weak and alone. But the sea made him brave and strong. That’s the art.

This is my first book by Hemingway and I’m blown away at how he took a story about a man fishing and made me love the man, the boat, the fish, the boy and all other parts of this so much.

It is clear why this book won the Pulitzer Prize. You feel the life you are reading about. You feel the pain, the sadness, and the strength of nature. Just as the "old man dreamed " we can dream of and work to become such descriptive narrators. If you want to read great writing this is it.
